If you are going to be in Boston for Patriot's Day, or any other day, and you aren't sure what you might want to do, here are 10 things to do in Boston. It would be impossible to do all these things in one day, but this list will give you some ideas.
1. Faneuil Hall - Quincy Market. These two markets are right next to each other and are a blast. There are more places to eat in Faneuil Hall than you can imagine, and you can get just about anything you ever wanted at Quincy Market. If people watching is your thing, you can't beat it here.
2. Boston Common, Beacon Hill. The Common doesn't really come alive until the weather gets a little warmer, but it is still fun to visit. The Boston Common is the oldest park in America and has trails, ponds and the famous swan boats, which don't start going until it gets warmer. When the flowers are blooming across the street at the Public Garden, it is gorgeous.
3. John F. Kennedy Library, Columbia Point. Designed by architect I.M. Pei, this library honors the former Boston congressman and 35th president of the United States. There is a museum honoring John F. Kennedy and the political life, and you can take a guided tour.
4. USS Constitution, Charlestown. Just across the harbor is the home of the USS Constitution, the oldest warship in the US Navy. Walk aboard and see what life was like on an early 19th century sailing ship. Next door is the USS Constitution Museum with lots of cool exhibits and information. If you like to climb stairs, visit the Bunker Hill Monument at the top of the hill in Charlestown.
5. New England Aquarium, Central Wharf. Housing a popular penguin exhibit and a 200,000 square foot coral reef, this is a great place to visit on a cold or rainy day.
6. Harvard University, Cambridge. Just across the Charles River in Cambridge, Harvard has a ton of things to do. The oldest institution of higher learning in the country, you could easily spend a day or more exploring the campus and surroundings. Harvard Yard is the place to start when you visit this historic campus.
7. Fenway Park, Kenmore. Tours start at 10 and 11 AM, except on game days, for this historic ball park, home to the Boston Red Sox. Even if you aren't a Sox fan, you will like the tour of this unique stadium as you get to walk out onto the field and see it from every angle. (Read about opening day at Fenway park)
8. Paul Revere House - The Old North Church, North End. The home of the famous silversmith and midnight rider is the oldest house in the downtown area. Nearby is the church where the two lanterns began his historic ride.
9. Children's Discovery Museum, Waterfront. Even after a long day of sightseeing, your kids will still have energy for this fun place. With lots of hands-on exhibits and space for them to move around, it is an ideal way to let them burn off some energy with educational fun while you relax.
10. Museum of Fine Arts, Back Bay - The Fens. Even if you aren't a serious art lover, this is one museum you don't want to miss. Full of famous paintings by some of the world's most renowned artists such as Manet, Monet, Picasso and Whistler, you will enjoy your time here.
There are so many things to do in this historic and fun city that we couldn't possibly list them all here. This is a varied example of some things to do near downtown. There are even more things if you go just a little outside the city. Hopefully, though, this list will get you started. Enjoy your visit!
