Looking for some out of the ordinary things to do in Boston? A visit to one of the islands in The Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area is an unusual way to see Boston and a fun way to spend the day. The 34 islands in the recreation area offer an array of activities. With swimming beaches, camping, historic forts and the nation's oldest lighthouse these islands have it all! There are often free concerts, plays, tours and lessons.

Some island highlights include:

Georges Island - Home to Fort Warren. This Civil War prison is a good spot for ghost sightings of the Lady in Black.

Little Brewster Island - This oldest lighthouse site in the country is the only remaining lighthouse staffed by the US Coastguard.

Most Harbor Islands are accessible via a short ferry ride and are as close as twenty minutes from Boston. Ferries are managed by Water Transportation Alternatives. Service leaves from Long Wharf in Boston and from the South Shore at the Hingham Shipyard. The ride itself is an opportunity to see a unique view of the Boston skyline and perhaps spot some local aquatic wildlife. Tickets are currently $14 round trip to either Georges or Spectacle Island. Discounts are offered for families, groups, seniors and children. Inter-island ferry rides may be caught on Georges Island. Boston Lighthouse tours, and other events, may require an additional fee.

Wear layers of clothing. The weather will be cooler on the ocean. Bring sunscreen, food and water. Many of the islands do not offer these amenities. Enjoy this unique chance to view Boston from another point of view. Experience history, and nature, in a way that many have not discovered.

Hours and accessibility are seasonal. Further information, a calendar of events and details are available at:
