The call came all too soon, even though it was 2:00 am in the morning. Time sure can get away from you at Wally's. The call signals it's time to close but no one seemed to be ready to head home.
Not your ordinary, touristy attraction appeal, Wally's is about the best place for jazz one can find. A place the locals gather, Wally's really packs em in. Tiny and crowded, enthusiastic patrons ranged in age from the young crowd of mid-thirties to the older generation, who might remember years ago when Wally's was first opened. It was interesting to watch as they gathered round the bar and engaged in conversation while ordering another round. It was like a portrait painted long ago.
Rich in history, Wally's opened in 1947 and was the first club owned by an African-American. Continuing their tradition of giving student performers the stage, these practicing musicians set the tone for what proved to be a great evening. The musicians were awesome, nearly better than the professionals who took the stage in the final hours.
The bar, which does not serve food, is open 365 days a year, regardless of holidays. The crowds are diverse, the atmosphere is unique and the place offers a great time . The night I was there, it didn't begin to get crowded until after midnight. It seemed like the party was just beginning. You won't be disappointed!
There is not much located around Wally's so eat before you arrive. But do make sure to add it to your list of things to do in Boston. Latin or Blues night, you will be glad you took in the scene!
Located at 427 Massachusetts Avenue, off the beaten path, but easy to access. Call them at (617) 424-1408 if you want to see what the schedule is for your date of travel. You can also check them out at www.wallyscafe.com. A little gem you'll be glad you found!
