Lighthouse Point, New Haven Connecticut

Lighthouse Point ParkWhen we think of New Haven, we think Yale. Not always. Close to the hallowed halls of Yale, tucked away in a corner of the city, we found the Lighthouse Point Park. It was an early fall afternoon when we drove through its entrance, and were told that after Labor Day, there was no parking charge for even out-of-towners like us and dogs were welcome anytime!

Apart from a towering lighthouse, there was a children's park with a carousel, and quite a few rare birds and butterflies adding color to the surrounding. As we walked along the coast, we saw some locals kayaking and sailing to their hearts' content. Further down from the lighthouse, we saw a fishing pier lined with sun-tanned fishermen and their young crew. Mostly, the crew consisted of kids happily helping out with the muddy worms. The sea was calm, much like everything else around it. The waves lapped gently on the glittering sand, making a soft splish-splash at regular intervals.

Feeling relaxed and happy, we started walking towards the lighthouse to see rows of white chairs being placed facing the sea. This was followed by some frantic discussion and the chairs were promptly hauled up in a matter of minutes. I gathered from a busy planner that a wedding was to follow the next day. What could be better than a white wedding against the mysterious blue backdrop of the Atlantic?

Fishing PierClose to the lighthouse, we noticed a rock, engraved with a chapter from our history. It read, "Near this spot a portion of the British Troops under Gen. Tryon of New York landed July 5, 1779 intending to burn New Haven. The opposing force became so large that the British retreated to their boats on July 7." Now that is something to be proud of.

Hungry from our dose of history, we chose a rocky cove away from the sea-shells and sea-weeds to grab a bite. We had packed a light lunch and it was a wise decision as the concession stand was closed.

Sunset at Lighthouse PointSoon after, the sun began to get dimmer. Boats and kayaks slowly came back and were towed away by cars. A warm glow fell on the lighthouse and as I watched the crimson rays of the sun recede into the sea, I wondered if any photograph could ever capture the mood and the lights with as much perfection. Couples on brown benches, holding hands enjoyed the beautiful sunset. Children could be seen swinging against the setting sun. The park accommodated both couples and family without intruding into the private space of either. That is where lies the beauty of choosing an off-beat location like Lighthouse Point Park.
